Planning is essential for budgeting your grocery buying while making sure your kitchen is stocked with essentials for cooking.
Research some recipes (Easy Peas Recipes, perhaps?). I like to find recipes that use ingredients I already have. Otherwise, I will end up spending as much money or more on what I cook at home than what I can get at a restaurant. But sometimes you just don’t have canned crab in your cupboard.
Look through your freezer and your fridge. Look through your cupboards and your pantry (Oh, and throw out expired stuff while you’re at it). Make a list of everyday essentials you need from the grocery store.
Write down your dinners for the week and add anything else you need for your menus to your grocery list. By the way, I normally only plan dinners, but if you have a tasty breakfast or lunch recipe in mind for a casual weekend, go for it and stick it in your weekly menu plan!
Planning enables you to make logical and practical decisions about what you buy, what you’d like to cook and what your family would like to eat. When you have a plan, it’s less likely that stubborn Cooking Apathy will return. Next time: Banishing Cooking Anxiety with Preparation!
